1840 Braided Hair Large Cent, circulated condition

Description: US Large Cent· Coins were the first US 1/100thdollar issue authorized by the US Government. They were struck between 1793 and 1857 when the cost of the coin was deemed too high, and the US Small Cent (Penny) replaced them. There were no coins struck during 1815 as the supply of copper planchets had been exhausted, and while more were ordered as soon as the War of 1812 concluded, they did not arrive in time to strike coins for 1815. · There are six major series of the coin, many of which have variations:1. Braided Hair Version: 1839-1857; designer Christian Gobrecht; 100% Copper, 27.5 mm,10.89g· There were numerous die patterns in the 18th Century as all dies were handmade. The hand-press method was used until steam power came to the mint in 1816. The more modern roll machine took overproduction for the final series of large cents.
