1840 Antique Map; Monmouthshire. Cole & Roper. Orig Outline Colour

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique map "Monmouthshire". The map has early colour. DATE PRINTED: 1840 from a plate first produced in 1804 (see provenance below for the publication history). SIZE: The printed area including titles is approx. 7.25" x 9.75" (18.5 cm x 24.5 cm) with a centre fold as issued. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by Cole. PROVENANCE: A plate first published in Cole's "The British Atlas " in 1804 and subsequently in "English Topography" between 1816 and 1827. The maps then appeared, updated with the railways and plate numbers, in Dugdale's "Curiosities of Great Britain: England & Wales Delineated." published between 1835 until 1842 when the maps were replaced with new plates engraved by Archer. The Archer plates are far more common than the earlier Cole plates. This example includes early railways and plate numbers so was printed between 1835 and 1842. TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good. Suitable for framing.
