Description: Fully titled and subtitled, An epitome of general ecclesiastical history from the earliest period to the present time. With an appendix, giving a condensed history of the Jews, from the destruction of Jerusalem to the present day. Authored by John Marsh, FIFTH EDITION stated on title page, published by J. Tilden aned Co. in 1838. FULL LEATHER BOARDS IN VERY NICE CONDITION. Professionally refurbished. Boards were attached to spine but loose - their attachment has been solidified. The leather was sealed, leaving them a soft sheen. Rubbed but legible gilt titling and decoration on the spine. The book was signed and dated (1838) by "Lyman Strong". There may be many Lyman Strongs, of course, but there was one I found online who plausibly could be this one. According to the genealogical page, he was born in 1806 and passed in 1867 - he would have been 32 when he signed this book. His brief bio overview on the page credits him with being " "Colonel" Lyman Strong (the "Col." was honorary) ... was a US Federal Judge back in the days when judges rode circuit." The genealogical page further documents his life in Virginia during the Civil War, with this passage: "During the siege of Vicksburg, Judge Strong and his family were in the city. They survived on very little, and my grandmother said her family told her that they often subsisted on rats during the harder times. Judge Strong was friends with a number of senior Union officers and they would send him word before the bombardments started so that he could get his family into the caves near the city. Supposedly, one time the word came in too late and [Loula Ida (Strong) Clements] was hit with shrapnel." In any case, the book has 2 maps and one foldout of a timeline of Jewish history. All three are shown in listing photos. They are in GOOD CONDITION, as seen, although I did note some tape repair on the B&W map of the Middle East. There are 6 one-sided leaves of B&W engravings that start the book, an adjoining pair shown in the listing photo. There is also a decorative title page adjacent to a B&W frontispiece, also shown in the listing photo. There are no further illustrations in 431 pages, followed by the Appendix on the History of the Jews. The pagination continues in the Appendix to 450. A brief overview of the author and the book from another listing: "Marsh (1788-1868) was pastor of the Congregational Church in Haddam, MA, and later associated with the American Temperance Society. He entered Yale College at age 12 and graduated at age 16. The book is a religious history guide, with information on idolatry, wars, persecutions, prophets, superstitions, tongues, Luther, the Roman church, fanaticism, Mennonites, and much more. Numerous engravings and foldouts, including large color frontispiece folding map engraved by E. Huntington; folding map of Palestine or the Holy Land with the Divisions into Tribes; foldout historical and ecclesiastical chart also engraved by E. Huntington; and 12 handsome woodcut engravings."
