Description: This is an 1831 half dollar of the Capped Bust Liberty series, in representative little worn condition, as coins used as bank bullion assets in bags would be. This series of coins is in the Early American era, just pre- to post- War of 1812 and a couple of decades after. Coins were still as originally envisioned by the Founding Fathers; instead of a reeded rim, these coins read "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR," making it a Type 1. Silver dollar minting had stopped in 1804 and would not resume until the Liberty Seated series in the 1840s - so bags of these half dollars were really the contemporary bullion coins, easier for banks to obtain and bag in quantity than gold coins, and 50 cents was still out of reach of most consumers' daily commerce needs. This coin is just on the line of the Almost Uncirculated range, with details as such, including the details of Liberty's shoulder clasp (including its inner design). There are evidently die polishing marks or other in the fields, and golden brown toning is visible in the obverse and reverse rim areas of fields, reflecting (no pun intended) the century and a half and more since minting and circulating. It may not be a likely candidate for "slabbing," but it can be nice to add to a type collection. For a collector who needs a detailed specimen as part of a type set, this could be the coin that fits your collection! This ships with signature tracking, for your assurance.
