Description: I have here for sale the complete set of all five books entitled JOURNALS OF THE FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD VOYAGES FOR THE DISCOVERY OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE from the Atlantic to the Pacific, in 1819-20-21-22-23-24-25, in His Majesty's Ships Hecla, Griper and Fury, under the orders of Capt W E Parry, R.N. F.R.S., Vols I-V. First edition published by John Murray in 1828. There are a total of 10 plates across the five volumes and a fold-out map showing the Discoveries of Captain Parry in the Arctic. Sir William Edward Parry FRS (19 December 1790 – 8 July 1855) was an Royal Navy officer and explorer best known for his 1819–1820 expedition through the Parry Channel, probably the most successful in the long quest for the Northwest Passage, until it was finally negotiated by Roald Amundsen in 1906. In 1827, Parry attempted one of the earliest expeditions to the North Pole. He reached 82° 45' N, setting a record for human exploration Farthest North that stood for nearly five decades before being surpassed at 83° 20' N by Albert Hastings Markham in 1875. Rebound in lovely maroon cloth hardboards. White title labels to the spines with black title lettering. In fine condition externally. Pages clean. There is a receipt for the set when it was purchased in Halifax Nova Scotia on 20/10/2005 before they were rebound. The set cost $311, so now that they are rebound, I am pricing them at £400.
