1820 Antique Print; Beverley Minster Nave, Yorkshire after A. Pugin

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Beverley Minster: Yorkshire. Compartment of Nave Exterior & Interior." DATE PRINTED: 1826, dated 1820 on the print, the date of engraving.SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 24 x 16 cm (9.5 x 6.25 inches) plus margins with a blank back (medium). ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Etched by J.H. Le Keux and drawn by Charles Ferdinand Porden (1790-1863). John Henry Le Keux (23 March 1812 – 4 February 1896) was an English architectural engraver and draughtsman. Augustus Charles Pugin, born Auguste-Charles Pugin, (1762–1832) was an Anglo-French artist, architectural draughtsman, and writer on medieval architecture. He was born in Paris, then the Kingdom of France, but his father was Swiss, and Pugin himself was to spend most of his life in England. Pugin left France during the Revolutionary period for unclear reasons about 1798 and later entered the Royal Academy Schools in London to improve his skills. Shortly afterwards he obtained a position as an architectural draughtsman with the architect John Nash. After considering and abandoning a career in architecture Pugin married and settled on a career as a commercial artist working primarily for publishers of illustrated books. He was a skilful watercolourist as well as an accomplished draftsman. PROVENANCE: Britton produced this print for the 'Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain represented and illustrated in a series of views, elevations, plans, sections, and details of various ancient English edifices, with historical and descriptive accounts of each,' 4 vols. 1805-14, and to these was added in 1818-26 a supplementary volume—the best of the series—'Chronological History and Graphic Illustrations of Christian Architecture in England, embracing a critical enquiry into the rise, progress, and perfection of this species of architecture.' The letterpress was meagre, but the artistic excellence of the illustrations procured success for what Southey (Quarterly Review for September 1826) pronounced to be the 'most beautiful work of the kind that had ever till then appeared.' This print is taken from the latter Chronological History publication. TYPE: Antique etching printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Beverley Minster in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire, is a parish church in the Church of England. It is one of the largest parish churches in the UK, larger than one-third of all English cathedrals and regarded as a gothic masterpiece by many. Originally a collegiate church, it was not selected as a bishop's seat during the Dissolution of the Monasteries; nevertheless, it survived as a parish church and the chapter house and the attached church of St Martin were the only major parts of the building to be lost. It is part of the Greater Churches Group and a Grade I listed building. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
