I have been unable to locate another example of this map produced in Halifax. A fascinating early map of North America, pre-dating the discoveries of Lewis & Clark. No sign of the Rocky Mountains. Louisiana dominates the continent. The US Extends to the Mississippi, but pre-dates Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio. The NW Passage is clearly shown, along with a pre-Vancouver, post-Cook treatment of the NW Coast. Many Indian Tribes name. The Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are nicely rendered. Texas, New Mexico are depicted in the West. DATE PRINTED: c.1815. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 23 x 19.5 cm, 9 x 7.75 inches (medium) plus margins. PROVENANCE: This antique map comes from 'Barclay's Universal English Dictionary Including a Complete Modern Gazetteer and Atlas...' by the Rev James Barclay, published in Manchester by J. Gleave 196 Deansgate, c.1815. ARTIST/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Lawson, Halifax, Yorkshire.TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper.
