Description: THE HISTORY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, FROM ITS FIRST SETTLEMENT IN 1670, TO THE YEAR 1808 By David Ramsay Published: David Longworth, Charleston, SC, 1809. FIRST EDITION. Two volumes. xii,478; iv, 602pp. lacking both maps. Outer binding is in rough condition, thus a candidate for a professional rebind. Boards are detached. Leather spine heavily chipped on both volumes (see pics). Text blocks are generally in good condition. A standard work, by the prolific historian and native son. The better part of the book is devoted to the southern campaigns of the Revolution, and to biographies of prominent early Carolinians. The Streeter sale catalogue notes that the second volume "as a survey of life in contemporary South Carolina is of great value." HOWES R34, "aa." SABIN 67686. STREETER SALE 1139. Interestingly, this copy bears the signature of William C. Bee on the title page of each volume. William C. Bee, owner of the leading blockade running business in Charleston during the War Between the States, served as a commissioner from South Carolina negotiating a withdrawal of Federal troops and the end of Reconstruction. Bee helped establish the phosphate industry in the Charleston area after the war. Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.
