There are essays displaying Meikle's thoughts on marriage and heaven and hell. In addition, there is a section on sayings, private readings on the Psalms of David and a poem entitled 'Emmanuel'. James Meikle grew up in humble means. He wished to study at Edinburgh for the ministry, however due to poverty and his father's death he was unable to do so. He attended some medical lectures at Edinburgh and returned to his home town in 1750 to practise as a surgeon. However, this did not work and he entered the navy. Many of his 'Meditations' were written during his time in the navy. This book contains a variety of works, which provide insight into the inner mind of a humble surgeon from Carnwath in the late eighteenth century.
