Description: The Columbiad, A Poem. By Joel Barlow, Printed for Fry and Kammerer, Philadelphia, 1807, frontispiece with ten full-page engravings, 444 pp plus postscript, full blind stamped leather, 12 x 10”, folio. In good condition. Handsomely bound in fine pebbled brown leather with lovely blind stamping. Grid motif with meandering design, great blind stamped compartments and five raised bands. Moderate scuffing and light dryness to edges and corners. Tear in top compartment down middle. Rubbed joints and raised bands. All edges gilt. Marbled end papers free of ownership. Tissue guard is folded irregularly with foxing. Minor offsetting from frontis and plates throughout. Consistent foxing through first signature with dark dampness staining affecting the gutters of the first six leaves. Internally clean and bright with instances of foxing and minor age staining. Free of known markings. Binding tight and intact. A sound copy. Please see photos. True 1st edition of Barlow’s vast and devastating poem, The Columbiad. It was on of the first American national epics of historical importance written after the Revolution, even though arguably a failure. The poem illustrates a dialogue of romantic discovery, patriotic founding, and Utopian vision for the future of the fledgling American nation. Scarce. RAREA1807DMOX
