By William Forsyth, To Which are Added, an Introduction and Notes, Adapting the Rules of the Treatise to the Climates and Seasons of the United States of America, by William Cobbett, Printed and Sold by D.S. Whiting, Albany, 1803, 280 pp, thirteen plates, tree calf, 8.5 x 5.5”, 8vo. In good condition. Light wear to extremities with minor scuffing along edges and corners. Joints slightly tender with light cracking and evidence of red rot. Small worm hole in third compartment, lightly slanted spine. Creasing along spine with cracking and slight loss at head. Evidence of an old name has been sadly erased from the fly. Internally toned with moderate foxing, heavy at times. Folding plates are worn at the edges, but all are intact. Some are slightly chipped with age stain. Free of known markings. Binding intact. Please see photos. Second American edition of the first book published in America devoted wholly to fruit trees. The first American edition was published in Philadelphia in 1802. The book was originally published in London, 1802, without Cobbett’s introduction and notes. Each plate is a different tree, be it apricot, apple, cherry etc., and is accompanied by explanatory text. Cobbett’s introduction informed that the importance of producing hardier fruit trees in America warrants his temporary withdrawal from the political scene to adapt Forsyth’s work. Forsyth (1737-1804) was superintendent of the royal garden at St. James and Kensington, where he was so successful that Parliament voted him thanks and gave him a monetary reward. RAREA1803BLML
