Many are believed to have been used to store bullion onboard the Spanish Armada. A few thousand examples survive globally, each built by hand with unique features, designs, and dimensions. This particular chest retains its false front-facing keyhole, cleverly crafted to provoke noise and frustration by being mere millimeters too small to house the key. The actual entry is accessible by rotating a hidden rivet on the lid. Inside is an extraordinary 8-bolt locking mechanism, still functional with a turn of the original key.
