Description: On offer is an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) and very scarce 1798 print "Wryte's Houses", in Portsburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland. DATE PRINTED: 1798 SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 15.5 x 11 cm , 6.25 x 4.25 inches (small) plus margins with a blank back. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Drawn by F.Dick and engraved by the Scottish artist: Alexander Robertson, (1772 - 1841) . Published by Robert Scott (1777-1841).The son of Grizell and Robert Scott, he was born on 13 November 1777 at Lanark, where his father was a skinner. He attended the grammar school at Musselburgh, and at the age of ten was articled to Andrew Robertson, an engraver at Edinburgh; there he also worked in the Trustees' Academy. Among his pupils were John Burnet, John Horsburgh, and James Stewart. He died early in 1841. PROVENANCE: This print was published in 'Picturesque Views in Scotland', by Robert Scott. A very rare collection of engravings of Scottish scenes, mostly engraved by Robert Scott, based on paintings/sketches by Alexander Carse, C. Cooper, A. Stuart, Capt. I. Robertson, J. Denholm, F. Dick, and Scott himself - a small number of the series are dated, the latest being 1798. TYPE: Antique copper engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Good; suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase.
