Description: A wonderful old framed copper plate engraving print attributed to George Morland by the gallery I purchased it from in the 1990's in Boston. Under the lovely colored print of the woman, at left is printed "Morland pinix", at right is printed "Marye Sculp". I can find a very limited amount of info on Sculp the engraver. Mostly in horticulture. It appears there may be one other copy of this print in Germany, listed in an inventory book. Further down is printed: A Paris chez Chereau et Joubert rue des Mathurins aux 2 Piliers D'or. Par son tres affectionne et respectueux Serviteur, Joubert I am unable to find anything of this woman depicted, and there is absolutely no copy that I can find on the web of this picture, so you could have a quite rare print here! but there is an interesting tidbit about the print shop located at rue des Mathurins St. Jacques, aux Deux Piliers d'Or, Paris on Wikipedia: Legacy[edit] The inventory of the business after Margueritte Chéreau's death was listed and her will recorded as C 621, 23 April 1755 in the Extracts of the Minutier Central des notaires Parisiens.[5] On 31 March 1768 sale of the inventory of goods of Francois II Chéreau (deceased 22 Feb 1755) were finalized with Jacques-François Chéreau (1742–1794).[5] In 1787[7] when Jacques-François Chéreau retired, the collection ("fonds") numbering in the tens of thousands of plates, prints and plate blanks was sold to François Etienne Joubert (1787–1836),[5] as well as the business premises, the mark of "Two Pillars of Gold," and book publishing records.[7] Joubert's address is given as rue des Mathurins St. Jacques, aux Deux Piliers d'Or, Paris after the sale and his name may appear with "chez Chéreau" or alone on plates published after that date.[8] In 1821, Joubert published "Manuel de l'amateur d'estampes" with material from the fonds Chéreau.[8][9]As stated in condition above, the frame is crumbling from age. The wood and plaster is chipping and I can only say I will be as careful as possible in wrapping and shipping but cannot account for rough handling by the post office and further damage that can occur. Please see the pics for two of the worse areas.
