Description: Lake Erie Maps & Prints An Authentic Antique Print: Not a Modern Reproduction! We Glady Combine Multiple Items to Save Shipping Fees Description: It is an authentic antique copper engraved print approximately 236 years old from Pierre Bonnaterre's Tableau Encyclopedique et Methodique des Trois Regnes de la Nature, vol. 7, Icthyologie, published by Panckoucke, Paris, 1788, a copy of the title page is included, see the pic of the title page. Not a Modern Reprint. It is being sold as a single sheet, not mounted, matted, nor framed. Overall, a really nice example of a late 18th century natural history plate, produced during a period in which naturalist were fascinated with the categorizing of species and discovery of new species that was put in order by Charles Linnaeus Systema Naturae, which naturalist soon adopted and set to work enlarging upon, such as in this work by Abbé Bonnaterre.Abbé Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752-1804), French Zoologist who contributed to the cataloging of over 400 species of Fish and the identification of 25 new species in his contibrution to Panchoucke's massiveTableau Encyclopedique. Yet, his contributions were not only limited to Fish, but other zoological branches as well, including sections on mammals, birds, reptiles, snakes, amphibians and insects. Bonnaterre drew up the prints based on earlier works by Marcus Elizer Bloch, whose prints were also used by Diderot in his enclyclopedia, as well as later in the works by Buffon and Lacepede. Although there is a resemblance in pattern and style, Bonnaterre's attention to fine detail and the hyper-realism sets his work apart from his predecessors.Robert Benard (or Jacques Renaud Benard), supplied many of the copper printing plates for Bonnaterre'sTableau Encyclopedique et Methodique. The "Benard Direxit" in the bottom margin indicates that the plates were directed by him in his large atelier of engravers, which had become very successful by this time. Size: The image area measures 6 1/4 by 9 inches (16x23cm) on a 9x12" page (23x32cm) Condition: The print is in Good condition for its age, blank on the reverse, printed on a heavy cotton page with deckled edges as originally issued. There is some minor wear on the edges and light dampstaining, otherwise it is clean on very strong flexible high cotton paper of the period. Overall, a really nice example that would frame up well, see the pics for more on condition. The pics are of the actual print.Shipping: We are always glad to combine items into one shipment, which ebay does automatically when you purchase multiple items through the ebay cart systems, you will only be charged one shipping fee and free US shipping on 5 or more items, International rates apply elsewhere.
