Thanks for your input....JR Answer Hi I'm John, Thanks for your question. They were there when I purchased the coin. Examining the (Rev) photos (Rev) before & after certification these marks seem less prominent in the slab. NGC says this coin was cleaned. I don't doubt it, but not by me. If I were forced to guess, they may have been caused during storage in a place that was less than desirable. It is 230+ years old and has much history to tell. Possibly there was much more and whoever cleaned it was not able to erase everything. Thanks Again, John
