Description: AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Revolutionary War-dated muster roll for Major Carl Leopold von Bauermeister’s German regiment employed by the British to fight in the American Revolution. REVOLUTIONARY WAR-DATED 1781 MUSTER ROLL FOR BAUERMEISTER’S GERMAN REGIMENT EMPLOYED BY THE BRITISH TO FIGHT The British had a treaty with the Duke of Brunswick and other German princes that allowed the British to hire German mercenaries during the Revolutionary War. England paid the Germans annual subsidies and other fees for Hessian casualties. Around 30,000 Germans came to America and fought in almost every campaign of the American Revolution. A fascinating Hessian muster roll dated two months after the Battle of Yorktown that effectively ended the war. MAJOR CARL LEOPOLD VON BAUERMEISTER NOT ONLY FOUGHT AT THE BATTLES OF TRENTON AND WHITE MARSH, BUT HIS DIARIES ARE THE MOST RESEARCHED AND DOCUMENTED PRIMARY SOURCES FOR BOTH ENGAGEMENTS Bauermeister was a Hessian officer who served as the first adjunct to all three Hessian commanders-in-chief, aide-de-camp to General Henry Clinton from 1779 to 1782, and was authorized by Generals Guy Carleton and Friedrich Wilhelm von Lossberg to negotiate with the Continental Congress for the release of German prisoners of war. He not only fought at the Battles of Trenton and White Marsh, but Bauermeister’s diaries are the most researched and documented primary sources for both engagements. A FASCINATING HESSIAN MUSTER ROLL DATED TWO MONTHS AFTER THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN THAT EFFECTIVELY ENDED THE WAR Text in French (the common language between the German troops and British authorities); contains a list of soldiers and officers and some with their current status; countersigned by Second Lieutenant Conrad Carl von Ehrenstein, Commissary William Porter, and others; three pages on a bifolium with docketing on the fourth page; measures 19.75 by 15.25 inches when open; created between December 25, 1781 to June 24, 1782; and in very fine condition with only light toning and soiling.
