Description: The Town & Country MagazineNew York Tea PartyBoston Port BillSamuel AdamsCaptain Cooke1774 "On Friday last there was a most numerous and respectable meeting of the freeholders and other inhabitants of this town, legally warned and assembled at Faneuil Hall, to consider an edict lately passed by the British parliament for shutting up the harbour, and other ways punishing the inhabitants, and to determine upon proper measures to be taken by the town thereon. After making choice of Mr. Samuel Adams moderator of the meeting...." "In the night the long expected tea ship Nancy Lockyer arrived at Sandy Hook....The Mohawks were preparing to do their duty, at a proper hour, but the body of the people were so impatient, that before it arrived a number of them entered the ship...M. took out the tea which was at hand, broke the cases, and started their contents in the river...." Original June, 1774 issue with New York Tea, Quebec Bill, Samuel Adams, Edmund Burke, Boston, Faneuil Hall, Inoculation for Measles (Vaccination), King Charles, Hawkesworth - much on Captain Cook's Voyages, and more. Fair amount of foxing and general age-wear (please see photos). Rare historic issue. In December, 1773, 200 New Yorkers signed a petition against the importation of tea by the East India Company. A couple days later, thousands of New Yorkers gathered at City Hall to protest the Tea Act. The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773, but New Yorkers only became aware of it on December 21st when Paul Revere rode into town with the big bold news.Winter slowed shipping down but when spring came around, ships - some with tea - were sailing once again. On April 19, 1774,the Nancy arrived in Sandy Hook with a huge load of tea onboard, its captain looking, as many did, for some help in navigating through New York harbour. Instead Capt. Lockyer was handed a petition that many local pilots had signed refusing to help bring tea into the harbor. This, and the destruction of tea, having it be tossed overboard just like in Boston, are spelled out in this issue. ******We ship swiftly and with safety in mind.Thank you.
