Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE GENTLEMAN AND CABINET-MAKER'S DIRECTOR being a Large Collection of the Most Elegant and Useful Designs of Household Furniture in the Most Fashionable Taste, by Thomas Chippendale. It states that it is the third and best edition, having 200 plates in total, 40 plates more than previous editions and covers designs of all types of furniture - tables, chairs, cabinets, beds, bed pillars, mirrors, picture frames, clocks, bookcases, fire screens, chimney pieces, etc. However, this is actually the facsimile edition published in 1912.Thomas Chippendale (June 1718 – 1779) was an English cabinet-maker in London, designing furniture in the mid-Georgian, English Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. In 1754 he published this book of his designs—the most important collection of furniture designs published in England to that point, which created a mass market for furniture—upon which success he became renowned. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum, "so influential were his designs, in Britain and throughout Europe and America, that 'Chippendale' became a shorthand description for any furniture similar to his Director designs". Bound in half red cloth on blue marbled hardboards. Cloth is worn and faded with a few tears. Wear to corners. Marbled paper has some rubbed areas and some scratches. Wear to board edges. Boards firm. Evidence of some really tiny worm holes to the pages. Pages are sunned. Binding firm. xxviii pages + 200 plates. 48 x 32 cm.
