Description: For your consideration is an ORIGINAL old master copper plate engraving created by Johann Melchior Füssli (Swiss illustrator and print maker, 1677–1736). He is one of the most renowned old master print makers of the 18th century, best known for his prints made for PHYSICA SACRA, an epic volume of art prints of Christianity and its connection to science. The volume contains 672 plates in total and all of which are masterpieces of religious art and scientific illustrations. The one in this listing is one of the original 672 plates published in 1730s. The Physica Sacra was created during the age of enlightenment. In the early 18th century, the field of natural history flourished, and naturalists compiled some of the most interesting works of the whole period. Physica Sacra is one of them. Physica Sacra is a massive compilation of art, science, and spirituality which uses the Bible as a reference point for describing the natural world. Bible verses and stories are mixed with scientific commentary. For this reason, it is also known as “The Copper Bible” or "Kupfer Bibel" in German. The decorative frame surrounding each main image is meticulously composed and differs for each print based on the main theme. The accompanying texts at the bottom of each print image are in both Latin and German. Overall, these prints are a one of a kind creation of great historic importance. Material from this work are highly sought after by collectors and among historians interested in the enlightenment period. It is printed on a folio-sized sheet of handmade, old laid paper with good margins all around. Dimensions of the page are approximately 16.5 by 10 inches (42cm*25cm). The paper has toned a little, and there is roughness on one of the margins in the normal process of disbounding from the original book. There is occasional stains, foxing, small tears, or missing corners on the margin (only for some prints. If any of these conditions exists for this particular print, I point them out for you in the last few photos). The condition of the main image is superb, very sharp and clear! No foxing or stains. Overall, this is a well preserved old master print that deserves the attention of any serious collectors of fine art, religious-theme prints, as well as any historians who are interested in the enlightenment age history!
