Description: FOR the complete story, FULL DETAILS and BIG CLEAR PICTURES, Please SEE THE DESCRIPTION 161-75 AD Rome FAUSTINA JUNIOR Wife of MARCUS AURELIUS Daughter of ANTONIUS PIUS Description This is an original "As" which was worth one-quarter of a Sestertius from Ancient Rome. It was struck at the Rome Mint between 161 and 175 AD for, and during the lifetime of, the Empress Faustina "Junior" or Faustina "The Younger". She was the daughter of the former Emperor, Antoninus Pius, and the wife of his successor, and current Emperor, the “Philosopher” Marcus Aurelius. She was also the mother of the future Emperor, Commodus. Coins were struck for Faustina during the reign of her father, her husband and after her death. Weight: 8.67 Grams, 28 Millimeters, Copper. "Roman Coins & Their Values", Volume 2, by David R. Sear. #5303. Obverse: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA • Faustina Augusta or Empress. • Diademed and draped bust of Faustina right. Reverse: SALVTI AVGVSTAE • For the health of the Empress. • Salus, the Goddess of health, safety and general welfare, seated left, feeding a serpent, who raises from an altar, from a patera. • S C in exergue for Senatus Consulto or by decree of the Senate. The depiction of Salus feeding a serpent from a patera, despite snakes not eating that way, is symbolic rather than literal. In Roman mythology, the serpent is a powerful symbol of healing, renewal, and protection. The act of feeding the serpent from a patera (a shallow dish used in religious ceremonies) represents the Goddess Salus nourishing and sustaining health and well-being. The serpent’s association with health and healing can be traced back to its connection with the God Asclepius, the deity of medicine and rejuvenation. The serpent’s ability to shed its skin and emerge renewed symbolizes rebirth, transformation, and immortality. This makes it a fitting emblem for health and healing, as it embodies the concepts of renewal and continuous life. The Coin: An original example, just the way it came out of the ground. It spent centuries in the earth and suffered for it. There is enough left to be sure what it is. Genuine, NOT a copy or reproduction, Real History in your hands.
