The Hebrew words are TZITZIT in Numbers 15:37-41 (which has a numerical value of 600); and GEDILIM in Deuteronomy 22:12. Ashkenazi, Sephardic and Chassidic tassels have 5 knots and 8 cords which equals 13 (600+13=613). 613 is the number of MITZVOT (commandments) found in the TORAH (the first 5 books of the TANAK - Hebrew Bible). In the Ashkenazi, Sephardic, and Chassidic styles, the long cord is called the shamash (servant) which wraps around all of the other strings. The number of shamash spirals between the knots is also interesting.
